Good news and not so good news

The Price is not Right

Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Thomas L. Friedman, author of ‘The World is Flat: a Brief History of the 21st Century’ wrote a recent column with this title in the New York Times.  The piece begins:

I don’t expect much from the G-20 meeting this week, but if [...]

Is the 2012 Olympic Games to be the last major tourist event in Europe?

OK, don’t panic, it probably won’t be. But a report released this month by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in the UK suggests that after that date air travel in the EU might become much more expensive as the carbon Emissions Trading Scheme includes emissions from aircraft for the first time.
The report concludes [...]

Sustainable development must become “business as usual”

If sustainable development is going to become a mainstream concept it must be accepted as a normal part of everyday business practice by line and senior managers in companies. The question ‘is that sustainable?’ has to become as common as ‘is that profitable?’; in fact, those two concepts need to move closer together until answering [...]

Hotel EMS Programs- Only Step #1 towards Sustainable Tourism

Over the last decade, we have seen increasing tourism and hospitality media coverage on efforts undertaken by a growing, but still minority, hotel chains and independent properties in using cost savings tactics associated with implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) programs. In supporting the expanding distribution of this message, the Hotel sector has publicly [...]

89% of the FTSE 350 companies surveyed expect they will want to fly less over the next 10 years
Business flights are expected [...]

Getting the message across

I’ve just got back from the IEMA annual conference in the UK. This institute represents those involved in environmental management, auditing and assessment, and the attendees came from various industry sectors, academia, local and national government.
Apart from the presentations and workshops, which were largely excellent, what struck me most was an underlying feeling of frustration [...]

The discussion of destination-based strategies

As a Professor of International Tourism and Sustainable (Eco) Tourism for a well-known Hotel School in Switzerland, my work looks at global and local travel and tourism from the perspective of the tourism destination. My logic is simple. Hospitality students take the majority of their courses from professors who focus on the performance of individual [...]

EU emissions trading scheme – a problem in the wings?

The European Union’s Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) was designed to create market conditions such that reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produces a cost benefit to the businesses involved. Unfortunately, it did not get off to a good start. Phase I of the scheme, which began in January 2005 and ended in December 2007, saw the [...]

Time for some joined-up thinking

The hospitality industry is not known for innovation, except perhaps in marketing, but it can seize an opportunity when it spots one. Ten years ago a reference to ‘the natural environment’ would have meant dedicated souls in anoraks and wellies but now it seems the whole industry is on the bandwagon.
For many hotels and resorts an environmental [...]
